Secret In Their Eyes Review

By  |

Secret In Their Eyes comes directed by Billy Ray who some may know as the director of Shattered Glass (2003) or Breach (2007), but he’s also quite well known as the screenwriter for The Hunger Games (2012) and Captain Phillips (2013). This film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Nicole Kidman and Julia Roberts.

Secret In Their Eyes Review

Secret In Their Eyes is a film that I’ve personally been looking forward to since I saw the trailer not long ago and I was quite happy to go along and see it. Being a fan of both Chiwetel Ejiofor and Nicole Kidman I was interested to see how these two would perform together in the film and the trailer is quite intriguing, who doesn’t like a good murder mystery?

Secret In Their Eyes tells the story of a bunch of high up investigators who are surveying a mosque which has in it possibly some suspected terrorists. However this storyline ends pretty quickly because early on in the film Jess’ (Julia Roberts) daughter turns up dead and it’s up to Ray (Chiwetel Ejiofor) to figure it all out. It’s an interesting story and those who like these types of murder mystery/detective stories will enjoy this more than others.

Nicole Kidman and Chiwetel Ejiofor are the standout performers in the film and the two were both great on screen and had two very interesting characters to watch, although Nicole Kidman’s role is maybe a bit smaller than some would expect from looking at the trailer, but it’s still substantial enough for the story we get. Julia Roberts is okay but to me she was a bit annoying in this and the rest of the cast were just kind of average which is a bit disappointing but okay overall.

The directing from Billy Ray is well done and during the film while I was in the cinema watching this I had a feeling the whole way through that what I was seeing on screen was pretty good. Especially for the Nicole Kidman and Chiwetel Ejiofor scenes of the film. When one of the characters got punched unexpectedly at a certain point I saw a few people in the cinema I was in jump in their seats slightly which makes me think that people were quite immersed in the experience.

The only real downside and complaint I have with the film is with the writing and in particular the conclusion. I felt that things seemed wrapped up towards the end quite well, but then the final twist we got kind of ruined it for me and made me think that maybe the writer was trying to be too smart with it when they didn’t need to be. I felt a bit unsatisfied with it at the end of it all, but I wouldn’t say it was so much that I wouldn’t tell people to go out and see this, because it is one of the better detective/thrillers/mystery films of 2015, it’s just not a perfect one is all it is. It’s still good though and if you don’t decide to watch it at the cinema it would be a very enjoyable film to rent when it’s out. But if you’re interested in it just a bit, I’d say just go along and watch it.

Overall Secret In Their Eyes is a fairly good detective/thriller/mystery film with some top class actors to watch and an intriguing story to follow. Both Nicole Kidman and Chiwetel Ejiofor were great in this and had the most interesting characters to watch, but Julia Roberts was a bit annoying though in this film. The story is fairly good, although I disagree that the ending is solid, I would still recommend watching this to those who are interested in seeing it. It would be a good value rental or a fairly good experience at the cinema, especially if you’re a fan of the genre or the actors this film has.
