Disney Developing Another Mary Poppins Movie

By  |

A mere 51 years since the first one, Disney is developing another live-action Mary Poppins musical according to Entertainment Weekly.

EW claims the film will take place about two decades after the first one and will feature material from P.L. Travers’ books. They also mention the film is not being developed as a sequel to the original 1964 film.

The new musical will be directed by Rob Marshall (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Chicago) and produced by John DeLuca and Marc Platt. The three recently put together Into the Woods for Disney based off Stephen Sondheim’s Broadway musical. That film made $203.5 million worldwide off a $50 million budget and received three Oscar nominations.

David Magee (Life of Pi, Finding Neverland) is writing the screenplay while Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman are writing new songs and a score. Shaiman wrote the score and co-wrote the lyrics with Wittman to the Broadway musical Hairspray.

Not only are Marshall and Disney collaborating with the Travers estate, but Richard Sherman, who wrote the score and all the songs for the original film with his late brother Robert, gave the film his blessing.

In 2013, Disney released Saving Mr. Banks, a drama about the creation of the beloved original film with Emma Thompson as author P.L. Travers and Tom Hanks as Walt Disney. That film took in $112.5 million off a $35 million budget.

There’s no word yet on when we’ll see Mary Poppins back on the big screen.
